Street-by-Street: Alfama
A fascinating quarter at any time of day, the Alfama
comes to life in the late afternoon and early evening
when the locals emerge at their doorways and the
small tavernas start to fill. A new generation of
younger residents has resulted in a small number
of trendy shops and bars. Given the steep streets and
steps of the quarter, the least strenuous approach is
to start at the top and work your way down.
A walk around the maze of winding Largo das Portas do Sol
alleyways will reveal picturesque Café tables look out over the Alfama
corners and crumbling churches towards the Tagus estuary. Portas do
Sol was one of the entrance gates to
as well as panoramic views from the old city.
