azulejo patterns.
Entrance
The Renaissance cloister
is the work of Diogo de
Torralva (1500–66). . Madre de Deus
Completed in the mid-16th century,
it was not until two centuries later,
under João V, that the church of
Madre de Deus acquired its ornate
decoration. The sumptuous Rococo
altarpiece was added after
the earthquake of 1755.
