Here Johann Baptist Seele depicts the precarious i ght
between a Russian vanguard, under command of the
famed general Alexander Suvorov, and a French
Republican rearguard during the War of the Second
Coalition. Retreating before Suvorov’s army, the
French had already destroyed the vital bridge in
an attempt to stall the Russians – cutting
off the critical link between northern
and southern Switzerland.
