                   GUARDED NEUTRALITY

                         Taken: c. 1914-18
Three Swiss mountain patrol ofi cers overlook the
Surettahorn mountain in the Swiss Alps, bordering
northern Italy. In its status of armed neutrality
                 during WWI, Switzerland mobilised several
thousand troops along its mainly mountainous
                 borders, predominantly along its western
borders with France, which at the
                       time was perceived as the
                          greatest threat.
