Three Swiss mountain patrol ofi cers overlook the
Surettahorn mountain in the Swiss Alps, bordering
northern Italy. In its status of armed neutrality
during WWI, Switzerland mobilised several
thousand troops along its mainly mountainous
borders, predominantly along its western
borders with France, which at the
time was perceived as the
greatest threat.
