“Don’t leap to solve
problems that
your child can figure
out on his own.”
—Eileen Kennedy-Moore, Ph.D.;
author of Kid Confidence
in spelling and literacy, possibly
because texting shortcuts forced
them to think about how words are
created phonetically. So if your kid
is attached to a phone or an iPad
anyway, why not use it to help him
practice spelling? Look for apps like
VocabularySpellingCity (free; App
Store and Google Play), which lets
kids play word games using different
spelling lists. Montessori Crosswords
($3; App Store) boosts spelling skills
by having players build words in a
grid using different phonics patterns.
