       UTTAR PRADESH &
       UTTARAKHAND

Stretching from the Hima layas to the Indo-Gangetic Plains, Uttar
Pradesh (UP) and Uttarakhand cover a vast area of 294,000 sq km
(113,514 sq miles), with a population of almost 214 million. Hindi is
the main language. Both states offer a wide variety of landscapes and historic
monuments. In UP’s plains are the famous Taj Mahal and other great Islamic
monuments, as well as the holy Hindu city of Varanasi and the Buddhist stupas
of Sarnath. The mammoth Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years at Allahabad
as well as Haridwar. In November 2000, the hill areas of Uttar Pradesh to the north
became the separate state of Uttarakhand. Its numerous attractions include beautiful
trekking trails, the picturesque hill stations of Mussoorie and Nainital, river-rafting tours
and yoga ashrams around Rishikesh, and Corbett National Park, famous for its tigers.
