Exploring Shikoku
Shikoku’s north coast facing the Inland Sea is much more
industrialized than its south coast, though not as much as
Western Honshu’s Sanyo coast. The interior of the island is
mountainous and rugged and not conducive to rice
cultivation. Shikoku’s main cities and historical sights,
including most temples on the pilgrimage circuit, are thus
on or near the Seto Inland Sea coast. Takamatsu is a popular
entry point. Kochi is the main city on the Pacific coast.
