QUARTER
It was Emperor Franz Joseph who 18th-century atmosphere with its
commissioned the major institutional picturesque streets, modest palaces and
buildings of the Habsburg empire, and the Baroque churches. The area’s cultural
city, along the Ringstrasse in the mid-19th institutions are vibrant: the brilliant
century (see pp34–5). Today these buildings productions staged by the Burgtheater
remain a successful and imposing example of and the wide-ranging exhibits at the
good urban planning. The districts that lie to renowned Naturhistorisches Museum
the west of the Ringstrasse are untouched, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum are
including Josefstadt, which still retains an hugely popular.
