       8 Saaremaa Island
Saaremaa is Estonia’s largest island and the jewel of its
archipelago. The capital, Kuressaare, is a strikingly picturesque
town whose relatively tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal
base from which to explore the island. The place has a lot to
offer in terms of things to see and do, but its extraordinary
natural beauty is the real attraction and the reason why so
many people feel compelled to return here. The breathtaking
landscape of Vilsandi National Park, the abundance of old
churches and the fascinating historic relics dotted throughout
the island are just some of the main highlights (see pp98–9).

       Known for its awe-inspiring landscapes,
unspoiled islets and bird sanctuaries, this park
was established in 1993 to preserve the
       ecology of Estonia’s coast.

The scenery along Sõrve Peninsula is some of the most Minor road
spectacular on the island, culminating in the magnifi cently wild
and windswept tip. The best way to explore the ravishing Ferry route
coastline is to take a bike or car trip. Park boundary
