Sycamore moth
Adult sycamore moths are hard to spot against tree bark, but
their long-haired caterpillars are an explosion of startling colour.
There are no hidden stings among the hairs but the caterpillar
may cause skin irritation if touched.
Blue morpho butterfly
The peleides blue morpho butterfly of
the South American rainforests has
shimmering wings measuring up to
20 cm (8 in) across. Its colourful
caterpillar, which has tufts of
stinging hairs, is known to turn
cannibal and make a meal of
fellow caterpillars.
Cecropia moth
This huge caterpillar turns into
the largest moth in North America,
which has a wingspan of up to
18 cm (7 in). The caterpillar itself
grows to about 10 cm (4 in) long.
The double row of bristling spikes
down its back do not contain
poison but look fearsome
enough to deter an attacker.
