                  INDIAN SNAKE CHARMERS
The earliest snake charmers were likely traditional healers
by trade. As part of their training, they learned to treat
snake bites, and many also learned proper snake-handling
techniques. Towards the end of the 19th century,
snake charmers became a popular tourist attraction,
but a law passed in India in 1972 banning the
ownership of snakes led to a dramatic
                         decline in the practice.
