1 Intelligent, loyal and brave,
the Serra da Estrela sheepdog 1 2
embodies all the qualities
required in this wild region. Its
heavy, shaggy coat helps it
survive the bitter high-altitude
winters and in the past its
strength was called upon to
defend the flock from wolves.
2 The Zêzere flows through a
classic glacier-cut valley. The
golden broom growing here is
used to thatch mountain huts.
3 Linhares, a town on the
western slopes of the Serra da
Estrela, is like a living museum,
with many fine houses dating
from its 15th-century heyday. 3
