He was about to give up when a file highlighted. It was by a researcher in the Unthar system of
Daemos; he requested a copy and contact details. Jonas walked in and come over.
“How’s the monitoring software working since we added that new set of parameters?” he asked
“It’s much more stable now; thanks for that. Here; take a look at what I just found in the Untharan
Archives” Jason replied and opened up the file. The contact details were not going to be of much
help as the researcher had passed away thirty years ago, but the file contained a basic Phonetic
matrix, a simplified translation matrix, an abridged alphabet and a collection of field notes and scans
of some objects.
“What made you think of doing this research Jason? It’s not your field of expertise anyway” Jonas
asked
“Oh; I used to study Xeno-Archaeology as an extra subject during my Academy training, it sort of
stuck with me as an interest and a hobby. I thought; since we are studying the probe, then maybe
some background data might help, and a friend of mine on Terra Prime who works in the Archive
owed me a favour. I now owe her one next time I’m back there, she’ll probably want me to wine and
dine her” he chuckled “I’ll send a copy to Ms Lorna as soon as she gets back from the Gardonna.
She’s looking over some strange samples one of the Archivists found in the ships hold. Some remains
of some creatures. She promised to share her findings with me, because of my “hobby”” he added
“You are a continual source of amazement Jason; I wish I’d been so enthusiastic in my youth. Now;
could you see to it that I get a copy of those telemetry logs from the Probe?
I think I might be able to work out a way of backtracking where it came
from precisely. Astro Navigation was my “hobby study project” when I was
at The Academy” Jonas asked and smiled broadly. Jason ran off a copy to a
data crystal, handed it to Jonas and the latter left. Jason looked at the
scans; finding them to be of broken utensils, some pottery shards with
inscriptions, pretty much mundane stuff, until he got to the tenth, eleventh
and twelfth scans. What confronted him almost knocked him out of his
seat. He transferred the object scans to the zoom display of the Coms
centre console so he could examine them in more detail. If what he was
seeing was for real and the object still existed; he had probably found
something that could blow the whole Kryst thing wide open. He quickly sent a textual message to
Lorna’s private coms and awaited her arrival. On the screen in front of him, in exquisite detail, was a
wall image with two sets of Character Glyphs, one was the strange Kryst set, and the other was early
Hagunenon. He could be looking at the “Rosetta Stone” of scans. The script was extremely fine and
tiny, being one small part of a panel depicting two physical beings each on one side of a shield like
emblem. The one on the right was Hagunenon with its snouted crocodile like head and reptilian
body reminiscent of Sobek the Egyptian Crocodile headed god; the other must be a representation
of a Kryst form. Apart from the eyes, it looked vaguely Untharan, but it was blue green in colour and
the skin was more amphibian, just like the Flutvarn but with scaly patches, not leathery like
Untharan skin. The scripts were in the upper right quadrant of the shield on what looked like an old
Hebrew depiction of the Commandment Tablets. The other quadrants depicting star systems and
symbols that were unrecognisable.
“So that’s what you look like; and what’s the connection with the Hagunenon?” Jason mused. He
looked at the field notes; the scan was done on a field excavation of ruins on a planetoid referred to
as the “Broken” moon. From the details it seemed a pretty dismal place; and practically
uninhabitable. Most of the excavation was done in protective shield suits. “I can see where Lorna
will be going next” he thought out aloud.
On board the Luna Mechia Misha and Trok made themselves useful
by helping Lyris and her assistant Marcus to open one of the Krall Cylinders.
“When our people first encountered some of these cylinders the seals had
deteriorated so much they were easy to open. This sealing stuff is
incredible; what did you use to open the flask Lyris?” Trok asked
