Ensemble - small but
mighty
Wind Ensemble, a chamber group made up of a small
band with one to three people to a part, is Band Director Allan
Amandus’s definition of this small but mighty musical group.
The purpose of Wind Ensemble was to learn various
contrasting musical styles and to learn and develop music
fundamentals, scales major and minor.
This ensemble of 62 students practiced a total of 80 hours
in the 18 weeks it was together. This time was committed to
education in music.
Requirements for Wind Ensemble were a performance
audition in which a level of proficiency had been obtained.
These auditions were based on prepared music, scales, sight
reading and tone. All of these requirements took a lot of time
and dedication. “To be successful it takes self-discipline and
determination. Like a lot of things you’re only as good as you
practice,” commented Amandus.
The group participated in District Contests and three
concerts, the January concert, February district festival and
a spring concert in May.
Band was not only a personal achievement but also a
social one. The people gained mutual respect for each person
and pride in group and themselves.
Senior Mike Utterback summed the entirety of the art
of music in these few words, “Music is never perfect. No
matter how hard you practice you always make mistakes.”
