The  new  and  improved

                              orchestra



              This  year,  the  orchestra  drafted  a  few  new  members  to
          help  enhance  the strings program.  Seventeen  Wind  Ensemble
          students  joined  the  orchestra.  The  full  orchestra  met  once  a
          week.
               The combined orchestra took part in the two-day  Beatrice
          Orchestra  Festival.  Twelve  hours  of  practice  were  crammed
          into  those  two  days.  The  hours  of  practice  were  to  ready  the
          orchestra  for  a  concert  at  which  Stephan  Hobson,  UNO
           Director  of  Orchestral  Activities,  conductor  of  the  UNO
           Symphony  Orchestra  and  music  director  of  the  Omaha  Area
           Youth  Orchestra,  guest  conducted.
               Top  honors  for  the  strings  players  included  the

               The  orchestra  held  a  winter  concert  with  the  Wind   Mary Keearns, Melissa Bridwell, Monica
           Ensemble,  Symphonic  and  Jazz  Bands  and  performed
           “Vivald”  in  the  April  2  choir  concert  and  entered  district
           competition.
               Pam  Dingman  described  orchestra  as  “a  group  of  one’s
           own  discipline  with  a  group  of  one’s  peers.”





                          Jazzin’  it  up



               ‘‘The  Jazz  Band's  main  purpose  is  to  learn  to  play  in  a
           ‘jazz style’,”  explained  jazz  Band  Conductor,  Allan  Amandus.
               This  year,  the  Jazz  Band  consisted  of  18  members:  five
           rhythm,  five  saxes,  four  trumpets  and  four  trombones.
               The  18  took  part  in  the  March  and  May  concerts,  the
           UNO  and  Waverly  Jazz  Festivals,  the  District  Music  Contest
           in  April  and  the  Ralston  Schools  Tour  in  May.  They  were
           also  the  entertainment  at  the  awards  assembly  in  May.
