The 1977 Delhaas Tiger football team ac
complished many of its goals during the sea
son. It was the first winning season since
Delhaas became a high school in 1972. It was
also a season which saw the Tigers defeat
Pennsbury for the first time in 22 years. The
Tigers for the first time were also a threat
to become the league champions.
The season began with four consecutive
wins, including one over state-ranked St. Jo
seph’s Prep, and a total domination of league
foe. Maple Point (35-7). The thirty-five
points scored against the Cougars were the
most ever by a Delhaas team. After the
opening four wins the Tigers went into a
slight tailspin before rebounding to defeat
Pennsbury (13-0) and brighten their chances
of a league title. A loss to Council Rock the
following week dimmed all the champion
ship hopes.
The Tigers finished the campaign with a
6-4 record and a bright outlook for the com
ing year. It is a great tribute to the Tiger
seniors who led the team into respectability.
It was the hard work and dedication of
these senior athletes that removed Delhaas
from the "soft-touch" category into a power
to be reckoned with.
The coaches and underclassmen owe a
great deal to the seniors, whose leadership
will be missed. They have helped lay the
foundation for what appears to be a strong
football program. If these young men put
forth the same effort in buildjng their lives,
they will find the same success they
achieved on the field. The senior Tigers
proved to everyone that they are WINNERSI
