W hat’s 6' 3", wears size 15 shoes, and can jump 6' 4" in
the air? No, the answer is not a professional athlete, a
large animal or mythical hero. This being can be seen
throughout the walls of Covington Catholic High School.
His nam e...is Cubby Connelly.
Alex “Cubby” Connelly, a Colonel, was born seventeen
years ago to two parents, and a sister, Hillary. Sports
have always been a central part of the fam ily’s free time.
Cubby’s mother and father were both athletes in the
past, his father playing football and track, and his mother
playing basketball throughout their high school careers.
The athleticism was lucidly passed on two their two kids,
Hillary and Cubby. Hillary, a graduate of NDA,
participated on the basketball and cross country teams.
Cubby was not to let this family tradition in sports die.
Since he was a young boy, he has been involved with
golf, basketball, baseball, track, and football.
Cubby clearly stated that his parent’s goals for him
regarding sports limit to Cubby having the best time he
can, and not worrying about his performance. He admits
that this support is comforting because he can be
competitive without pressures to succeed from others.
He has continued this avid participation in high school,
joining the football and basketball teams as a freshman,
and the track team as a sophomore. He has been
blessed with success in all three of these sports, but
admits that the most enjoyable for him is track. He has
worked to be a member of the varsity team for all three
of the sports he plays. His most proud moment was
clearing a 6' 4" mark for the track team to win an
individual track state title for the high jump event. He
aims to break the school record of 6' 6" by the time he
graduates.
So next time you see this 6' 3", giant footed,
unbelievable jumping being, realize that it’s not a
professional, not a wild animal, not a mythical hero; it's
Cubby Connelly, a fellow student at Cov Cath.
