Adventures in...
Marine B iology
With the presence of the new Science facility, provided by alum nus Wayne
H uizengua, the Sciences have reached a new height in the Pine Crest com m unity.
Rooms divided into classrooms and laboratories, provide an environm ent for opti
mal physical and m ental learning. Students also gain the ability to educate them
selves outside of the classroom on “field trips”, providing hands-on lessons that no
text books can dispense.
My alarm clock buzzes at 6:30 on a Saturday and I’m off..... to school. As I
pull up I am met by my buddy Justin Fiorintino “chino” who is extraordinarily
happy on this fine m orning. Mr. Kennedy calls out .. ’All A board!” and we are off
to hit the coast at the M arine Lab center. Joined by several enthusiastic M arine
Science students, we arrive and collect our snorkel gear from Mrs. Kennedy. With
a short lesson on safety and equipm ent use, we are shortly cruzin’ da coast in
search of the perfect reef. Captain Kennedy navigates our m ighty ship, steering
clear of pirates and killer sea monsters. O n the reef, our senses explore the vast
undersea world; viewing (not touching) the variety of species that inhabit the
ocean. T he day soon comes to an end as we board the bus back to Pine Crest. As
we part at the end of the day with a solemn good bye, each one of us takes a special
m em ory with us. Mine is never to rub reel coral all over my body again, (it hurts!)
