The Lady Cougars determined to put an end to Ioccoa
Falls. As a loose ball rolled down the side lines with one
opponent chasing after it, Holly Vanaman sprinted out of
her box to kick the ball out of bounds. In doing so, she
was side-tackled. In an attempt to miss the defender and
avoid an injury, Holly jumped over her and landed on
her right foot. She had a third degree ankle sprain, bro
ken fibula and a sprained knee. She said, “Although I
ended up being out for the season, I believe that God’s
plan was taking place. I just tried to deal with it the best
104 way and cheer my team on from the bench.”
For two years, the team ended the season with an
even win-loss record. One of the goals of the team was to
complete the season winning over fifty percent of the
games. “The goal of the team is to win, but also to finish

The team made a conscious decision to

put God first in all of their activities which in
cluded playing soccer in a Christ-like manner.

They started “prayer buddies,” and found Scrip
ture which related to soccer. This allowed the
team to develop a close relationship among each
other and to build a strong unified team. “The
team unity is still developing, but it is better
than it has ever been before. The strength of
the team is its spirit. We love to have fun, on
the field, but especially off the field. The friend
ships that you make on the team is encouraging
and will last a lifetime,” Annette Robinson said.
