On Saturday morning, February 1,
2003, after a sixteen-day mission,
NASA declared an emergency
and feared the worst after losing
communication with space shuttle
Columbia as it soared over Texas
several minutes before its ex
pected landing. The crew in
cluded (front) Rick Husband,
Kalpana Chawla, William McCool,
(back), David Brown, Laurel
Clark, Michael Anderson, and Is
raeli astronaut llan Ramon.
Husband’s and his wife’s
testimony garnered national atten
tion as the nation came to terms
with its grief.
On Thursday, October 24, 2002,
a Russian police officer armed
with a Kalashnikov rifle looks at
the main entrance of the Moscow
theater which was seized by
armed Chechen gunmen. The
marquee reads "Nord-Ost," a
popular musical. Chechen rebels
holding hundreds of hostages
shot and killed one captive. The
rebels were ready to die for their
cause, warning that thousands
more of their comrades were
"keen on dying."
The charred ruins of a bomb
blast in Denpasar, Bali, Indone
sia, were testimonies to the vio
lence that Al Quiada cells had in
flicted upon the international
community on Sunday, October
13, 2002. A nightclub, popular
among nationals as well as tour
ists, was destroyed late Saturday
night, killing more than 180
people and injuring more than
300 others. A second bomb ex
ploded about 100 yards from the
U.S. consular office in Denpasar,
the capital of Bali.
