Although many times people
thought of speech and debate as
the same thing, there were actu
ally several differences between
the two. “In debate you have
somebody who tells you ‘no, you’re
wrong’”, said Julie Spears, presi
dent ofthe NFLC. “ In speech, you
give a speech, and nobody asks any
questions.”
Many categories of speech
existed. Some of these categories
were extem poraneous, im
promptu, original oratory, dramatic
interpretation, humorous interpre
tation, among others. Since so
many categories did exist, “any
body who wants to do speech can
find their own niche,” said Daieuen
Shin.
Debate had basically two cat
egories - Lincoln-Douglas and
Policy. Policy emphasized the use
of evidence to change a current
policy. Lincoln-Douglas debate
mainly had to do with values, such
as moral issues.
“We argue our opponent’s
case and try to uphold our own
case,” said Spears explaining the
procedures in debate. A single
round of these arguments could
last I 1/2 hours for policy, and a
Lincoln-Douglas round could last
45 minutes.
Besides the two policy teams
which went to State, Julie Spears
and Josh Sorbel also went. In
addition they qualified for Nation
als at Boca Raton, Florida, along
with Shin and Kristinajacobberger.
