The Wiz, Madame Butterfly
and The Miracle Worker
...And Action!
The drama department put on productions of The Wiz and
The Miracle Worker. The Wiz was an extravagant, jazzy ver
sion of the classic tale "The Wizard of Oz." In The Wiz, Dor
othy and her companions the lion, tin man, and the scare
crow take part in a musical adventure through the land of Oz
on a singing and dancing brick road. The costumes and the
set were flashy and colorful adding to the fantasy atmosphere.
The Wiz was played be senior Jeremy Kalina. "Playing the
Wiz was one of the best roles I have ever gotten," said Jeremy.
"One of my favorite memories from the play was from the
night when the explosions that were supposed to go off when
I walked onto the stage were double charged. As the cans
exploded, they all hit the ceiling. One of the twisted, smok
ing remnants of a can flew into the front row making an audi
ence member scream and jump out of the way!"
The final production of the year was The Miracle Worker,
the dramatic tale of the a blind, deaf, girl named Helen Keller.
Playing Helen was sophomore Tawnya Littlejohn. "Tawnya's
performance in this dramatic and very difficult role was out
standing. She did a great job and managed to have fun too,"
said Emily Pearson. The show left the audience in tears
through all three performances.
Play Production put on a one-act production of Madame
Butterfly. They performed the play for a Ralston audience
after a home basketball game. The remainder of their perfor
mances were for competition. Madame Butterfly was an ex
travagant play with acrobats, lavish costumes and flaming
batons.
Making her first introduc
tion to her new teacher,
Annie Sullivan, played by
Natalie Tiehen, is Helen,
played by sophom ore
Tawnya Littlejohn.
