On April Z8, 1989, Allentown College received another
new addition. A sculpture by artist Jay J. Dugan was
erected on the plaza of the General Harry C. Trexler
Library.
The sculpture, entitled “ Biblos,” stands over nine feet
tall and weighs 4.5 tons. It is the fifth piece of artwork
by Dugan to be displayed on our campus. His other
works include the sculpture entitled “The Family,” located
outside Dooling Hall, (a smaller version of this can be
found in the library), “ Big Daddy” and “ Madonna” which
can be found in the lobby of the Labuda Center for the
Performing Arts.
As with his other works, Dugan donated “ Biblos” to
the school. In return, the college establishes a
scholarship fund for students in need of financial aid. The
amount of the fund is comparable to the worth of the
sculpture on the open market.
Allentown College is not the only institution to be a
recipient of Dugan’s gifts. Dther colleges and universities
include Uillanova, Bucknell, Lehigh, Rosemont,
Misericordia, Lafayette and LaSalle.
Jay J. Dugan, a businessman and practicing artist,
launched a merchandising and sales promotion career in
1953 with the establishment of the Jay Dugan Agency.
The success of the agency, which specialized in creating
graphic displays for Chrysler Corporation, enabled him to
launch a second career as an investment counselor, and
to pursue his avocation — creating monumental
sculptures.
As a result of his generosity, the gift program has
partially financed the education of 3Z graduates, and has
placed more than $1,D00,000 worth of sculptures on
college campuses.
