On Wednesday, May 3 William Proxmire, retired Wisconsin
senator, spoke at Allentown College as part of the sixth annual
Frank L. Marcon lecture series.
Proxmire concentrated mainly on the economic outlook of the
United States, but also covered topics ranging from the deficit
and the Soviet Union to Oliver North. He cited the nation’s
enormous household and business debts and called for a cut in
federal spending. Although his speech was delivered on a
serious note, Proxmire also extracted laughs from the crowd of
300 with his suggestion of cutting congress in halt.
Active in politics since 1950 when he was elected to the
Wisconsin 5tate Assembly, Proxmire was elected to the U.5.
5enate in 1957, where he filled the seat left vacant by the death
of Senator Joseph McCarthy. He was reelected to five
consecutive , six-year teams in his Senate career, beginning in
1958. It was during his years in the Senate that Proxmire
became renown for his Bolden Fleece spending waste awards.
Proxmire earned his undergraduates degree from Yale in
1938, an M.B.A. from the Harvard Braduate School of Business
in 1940, and a master’s degree from Harvard in Public
Administration.
The Marcon Lecture Series is made possible through
contributions by friends of Allentown College in memory of
Frank L. Marcon, a prominent area businessmen who served as
a college trustee from I960 until his death in 198Z.
