Future
1989 marks the 20th anniversary of Ralston High
School. It was in 1969 that the first graduation was
held in the gymnasium. Twenty years later, 261
seniors walked down the aisle to receive their diplo
mas.
The graduation ceremony took place on May 21 at
2 p.m. The welcoming speech was made by Saluta
torian Steve Thompson. “My speech was basically
just to welcome everyone and to thank them for
coming,” Thomspon said.
Class Valedictorian Tanya Leise based her speech
on a need for education to improve the world. “The
message I tried to get across was how education is
very useful,” she said.
Tom Kidd, who was chose to be class representa
tive, had been president of his class all four years of
high school. “I feel pretty good about it, but it was a
lot of work. That’s great that people would want to
elect me,” Kidd said.
Kidd’s main topic of his speech was what a di
ploma means. “It’s about how the diploma repre
sents the future. It was great to be chose class
representative, it was a real ego booster.” Kidd also
said it was tough to give a speech that would keep
people interested.
Thompson said he was glad to be graduating, but
sad too. “I’m going to miss a lot of people.” Leise, on
the other hand, felt the opposite. She summed
graduation up by saying, “It’s about time.”
Kidd says that its exciting, but also scary. “I like
goingto school, but I’m scared to think of the respon
sibility I have to face in college.”
