Sonia Ruhizi They are mixed together and undergo a fermentation process
Tanzania for about 28 days, then they mould them into shapes, smear
them with clay soil and bake them. Most of the people in her
community are low income earners and cannot afford to use
electricity or gas cookers, so there is high demand for cheaper
fuel. Sonia felt the need to help by producing affordable char-
coal that conserves the environment and is not harmful.
Through her business, Sonia has helped many Tanzanian
youth to get employment through collection of waste material,
production and packaging, and distribution of charcoal in the
villages. Many people have accepted the recycled charcoal and
use it, which encourages her. Through exhibitions and using
network marketing, the demand in Tanzania has expanded
and this has created a vision for Sonia that someday her char-
coal will sell across Africa.
