6.13. Counting days



                There  are  a  number  of  irregularities  in  counting  days.  The

                numbers mean either ‘so-and-so many days’ or ‘the so-and-
                so-many-th  day  of  the  month,’  except  that  these  two

                meanings are distinguished for the first number: ichi-nichi ‘1
                day,’ tsui-tachi ‘1st day.’




                                 tsuitachi                    1st day
                                 ichinichi                    1 day


                                 futsuka                      2 days, 2nd day
                                 mikka                        3 days, 3rd day


                                 yokka                        4 days, 4th day
                                 itsuka                       5 days, 5th day


                                 muika                        6 days, 6th day
