desu.
There is no traffic jam.
It looks as if there is no
traffic jam.
Nihon-jin ja arimasen. Nihon-jin ja nasasō desu.
He isn’t Japanese. He doesn’t look as if he is
Japanese.
Notice the difference in meaning between expressions
with the form -sō (appearance) and expressions ending in sō
desu (hearsay):
Appearance Hearsay
Yuki ga furisō Yuki ga furu sō
desu. desu.
It looks as if it’s going to They say it’s going to snow.
snow.
O-kane ga nasasō deshita. O-kane ga nakatta sō desu.
It looks as if he did not have I was given to understand
money. that he did not have money.
