Out of the Bag
You may have been wondering what is happening at the
former Harbourtowne Resort Golf Course in St. Michael’s.
The Links at Perry Cabin will debut next Spring on
Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. Being one
of Pete Dye’s early designs and since he was the original
architect of Harbourtowne, he was brought back to totally
rebuild the course literally from the ground up. Dye
received additional input from his wife and long-time design
collaborator Alice plus his son P.B., also pretty-well known
for his golf course designs. “This golf course is exciting
because it incorporates all of the Pete Dye mysterious things that he does,” commented
Alice Dye. P.B. said the final three holes will be called the “Good Night Kiss.” It starts
with a short risk/reward par 4, then a replica of the island green from TPC Sawgrass, and
an 18th hole they believe will be one of the most majestic finishing holes in golf. When
open, the golf course will be very exclusive, being available only to club members and
guests of the Inn at Perry Cabin.
Up to Par Management will be sponsoring the National Golf
Course Owners Association (NGCOA) Mid-Atlantic Golf
Leader Award. The annual award is given in recognition of
leadership in the golf industry and will be presented at the
Annual Meeting October 18th at the 1757 Club in Northern
Virginia.“We are elated to be sponsoring and presenting this
award,” said Sean Taylor, founder and CEO of Up to Par
Management. “This award represents the lasting impression
golf can make over multiple lifetimes.” Past recipients are
Allen Wronowski, PGA (former national president of the
PGA of America); Don Ryder (longtime director of golf at the Omni Homestead); Bill
Smith (Maryland State Golf Association executive director); and Bill Goodwin, CCA
Industries (owner of several large golf properties including Keswick Hall and Kiawah). Up
to Par manages several courses in the region including Bryce Resort in Basye, VA, and the
Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia.
Have you seen the fresh new twist to a
round of golf? The River Marsh Golf Club
at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay
Golf Resort in Cambridge, MD, now gives
golfers the opportunity to “surf the links.”
GolfBoarding is one of the newest rages in
the sport. In fact, GolfBoards were named
product of the year at this year’s PGA
Merchandise Show in Orlando. An individual
will stand with their golf clubs secured in
front of them, and maneuver with their body
weight and a one-touch thumb throttle. A
computer monitors speed and controls breaking to optimize ease-of-use and safety. Golfers
can move directly from shot to shot at up to 10 MPH, significantly reducing the time it
takes to play a round of golf, and they also inflict less damage to the turf than golf carts
or walking. “Long-time golfers and beginners can appreciate GolfBoards, increasing pace
of play, yet offering a bit more exercise than riding in a traditional golf cart,” said Abby
Messick, Resort Experience Director and LPGA Pro at River Marsh.
