to thin out some areas. They also
moved the eighteenth green closer to
the pond, but other than that, I didn’t
notice many differences other than the
outstandingly improved surfaces. If a
better collection of par 3s exist on one
golf course, I have not found them. The
island green par 3 sixteenth, ranked
Gold Course Hole 16 Par 3 & 17 Par 4
among Golf Magazine’s top 500 holes Gold Course Hole 18 Par 4
in the world, has clearly influenced
modern golf architecture, and holes
like the seventeenth at TPC Sawgrass
pay homage to this classic hole. The
Gold Course is revered as one of the
best examples of traditional golf course
architecture in the world and Mr. Jones
called it his “finest design.”
The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club also
has two other courses that make for one
of the best stay and play experiences
Colonial Williamsburg has to offer. The
Green Course, a Rees Jones creation,
opened in 1991 and is carved from
the same terrain but simultaneously
plays longer and more forgiving than
the Gold. Jones, Sr. also designed the
9-hole Spotswood short course named
Green Course Hole 15 Par 5
after colonial Governor Alexander
Spotswood. Built in 1963, it updated the Williamsburg Inn’s original 1947 nine
hole course. In all Golden Horseshow offers 45 walkable holes completely free of
surrounding real estate. The Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe boasts receiving
accolades such as “Top 100 Resort Courses in America”
by Golfweek Magazine and Golf Digest’s “2016 Best Golf
Resorts in the Mid-Atlantic.” It currently ranks number
79 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public
Courses. Accommodation options abound in official
Colonial Williamsburg with 1,000 guest rooms available
in a wide range of prices and distinction. Guests can also
indulge in the 33,000 square foot full-service spa and
culinary options ranging from historic taverns to casual
or elegant dining.
The Gold Course at The Golden Horseshoe has always
been one of the premium golf destinations in Virginia,
and with its recent renewal, it is poised to remain that
way for decades to come.
