Going Through Time
Music is therapy for everyone. Music is a great
way to help someone reminisce about the good old days.
Music is beneficial for the elderly who have been
diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Create an event that will bring back beautiful memories in
two ways: dress up to the time a loved one has enjoyed
and partner it with the music to set the mood.
So let the party begin. For example, Glenn Miller’s
popular hit “In the mood” has become a timeless piece. The benefits are: increase social interaction
and memory recall of long-forgotten years, increase happy mood, it decreases depression and
isolation, encourages the elderly to dance, great way to get exercise, encourage creativity by
accessorizing oneself, improve hydration, and improve appetite. So, will you be planning a special
event soon?
Reading
Do you love to read books? Reading is
fun and entertaining. Books are accessible
everywhere. The elderly who have cognitive
challenges can benefit from reading. Caregiv-
ers and families can read to their loved one.
Reading keeps the mind sharp and alert, re-
duces stress, improves sleep, and goes back
to a page if you don’t understand. Caregivers
and families can have a small discussion
about the scenario, characters, place, or situa-
tion in the chapter. In other words, reading increases discussion and social interaction. As part of an
activity, gather a group of elderly and read to them. After reading each page, discuss the story while it
is fresh in your mind. Everyone will be amazed by their interpretation and suggestions they will share
with their peers. Reading is fun. What is your favorite genre? Who is your favorite author?
