Small but constant deficits in sleep over time tend to have escalating
and long-term effects on brain function.
Children with higher IQs — in every age group studied — slept longer.
Interestingly, not getting enough sleep often leads to night awakenings.
So don›t be fooled by your seemingly wide-awake, not-tired child
and put them to bed later. Putting them to bed earlier is actually the
remedy. Sometimes even 15-20 minutes earlier may have a significant
impact and be all that is needed. You may also be surprised to find that
a well-rested child is also much easier to put to bed.
We all sleep. But it goes without saying that good quality sleep
is critical in the development of healthy children and is becoming
increasingly hard to come by. Know your child’s body clock, establish
good ground rules with regards to sleep and maintain solid routines.
It will give you and your little ones a world of good.
