CHAPTER 3 LANGUAGE OF PRESENTATIONS
1.5 h
Learning Objectives
After studying of this chapter, you should:
Be acquainted with phrases used in different parts of presentations and
understand why they are used.
Know several connectors for each function (addition, comparison,
contrast etc.).
Be able to describe graphics used on visuals in presentations.
Be aware of language means used in presentations.
Recall your experience:
1. Does it make the same impression if you hear a text which is read and if
somebody speaks without paper?
2. How can you indicate where you are in the presentation (beginning, middle,
end), how can you move from one idea to another?
3. What words help you express relationships between ideas and elements (e.g.
cause and result, addition, example)?
4. If you are to describe a picture or a graph, what words will you use? Give
some examples.
5. What means make the language simple enough to be understood at first
listening?
In presentations you must take various aspects into consideration, and clear
structure is one of them. In Chapter 1 we discussed non-verbal structuring aids
(pausing, voice control, body language), now we´ll have a look at the
appropriate language - structuring phrases.
From structuring aids the audience can see where we are in the presentation,
whether it´s the beginning, middle or near the end of the presentation. They can
also indicate what has been done or what will follow, introduce a new
subtopic/idea, draw attention to a visual etc.
In the following you´ll find several of them for individual parts of the talk.
