                  Learning Objectives

After studying of this chapter, you should know:

 What components you should involve in the preparation of presentations.
 How to proceed in the process of preparation.
 How to improve your performance in presentations.

Let´s have a brief look at the process of preparing a presentation as a whole. To
                  start with, answer the questions:

                      1. From your experience: When you are to speak on a topic, what will you
do first? Write the speech word by word? Prepare some visuals?
                         Something else? Give examples.
                      2. How can you learn before the presentation real delivery if it´s
                         understandable?
                      3. If you have time limits, how will you find out whether your presentation is
                         inside the limits?

Following the proven process of preparation can save your time and pains with
                  remaking presentation.
It´s recommended to start with the main body of the presentation. First, you must
be sure about the subject/topic. Sometimes it´s given by the management,
sometimes it´s up to you. Then choose the topic that is new, hot or provoking in
a good way. Make sure it´ll be beneficial to others, i.e. your audience. Specify

precisely the scope you want to present; don´t try to communicate too much.
Usually the time is limited and if you want to say too much, you´ll leave the
audience confused, which is not your aim, is it? Remember the “communication
window” from the previous chapter – how much people can remember from
                  what they hear.

The second factor which will influences presentation preparation is the purpose.
Think carefully of the objective of your presentation: is it to inform (demonstration,
explanation, process description), to persuade (convince, change people’s
minds or attitudes, get people to do something), or other? Mostly your aim will be
to inform people, but sometimes you can also need to persuade them to do
something. In each of the cases you may use a different organization of ideas,
but definitely you´ll adapt vocabulary to the purpose.

                                                                                                     11
