CHAPTER 4 DELIVERY
1.5 h
Learning Objectives
After studying of this chapter, you should:
Know the main components influencing effective presentation delivery;
Realize and follow your body language to create a good impression on
the audience;
Know how not to get lost in your presentation.
Be able to identify your voice and speech qualities.
Realize the aspects of preparing visuals.
Delivery plays a key role in the presentation as it directly influences the impression
you make on the audience, in other words, it affects the listeners’ emotions.
Delivery can be seen from several viewpoints.
The voice
The voice is probably the most valuable tool of the presenter. It carries most of
the content that the audience takes away. However, while we can easily tell
others what is wrong with their voice (too quiet or strong, too high or low,
monotonous etc.), we can hardly recognize mistakes and changes in our own
voice.
To be able to influence the impact, you should know four characteristics of vocal
qualities:
Volume, i.e. how loud the sound is. Your goal in presentations is to be heard
without shouting, not to be too quiet, but on the other hand not too loud.
However, if you want to have the audience attention, you must change the
volume. Good speakers lower their voice to draw the audience in, and raise it to
stress something.
Pace, i.e. how fast you speak. Talking too fast makes the presentation difficult to
understand, while talking too slowly makes listeners fall asleep. It means – you
should vary the pace to maintain the audience’s attention. An important thing is
pausing, which can help to emphasise the importance of a particular point, as
already discussed in Chapter 1.
Pitch, i.e. how low or high the voice is placed. Men usually have lower pitch than
women, but inside the groups you can hear significant differences. You can
hardly influence the natural pitch of your voice, but you can control it to a certain
