SPORTS EDITOR GRAEME WILSON

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and a warm welcome to you all for this West
Riding County Cup second round tie with National League side FC Halifax Town.
One dare say, even hope that the Shaymen have one eye on their FA Cup tie this

weekend but I am sure there will be a strong, representative side wanting to avoid a
repeat of their exit at Selby Town last season at the quarter nal stage.

Talking about the FA Cup one harks back almost 34 years to the day when the old
Goole Town met the old Halifax Town at the Shay in the rst round of the FA Cup,
where despite a brave performance from David Pugh’s side we lost 3-0 to the then
     Division Four side.
The new sides have met in the County Cup since then and the Shaymen won that

one as well, and after a good start this season they appear to have hit the buffers as
     far as their league goes.
Nothing bares comparison with our own fortunes where we have yet to win in front of

our own supporters in regulation play which is simply not good enough and quite
     demeaning to be honest.
One eventually runs out of excuses to explain why it should be and there has been
another change at management level to aim to rectify not just that but our position in

the Northern Counties East League table which I suppose one can say are inter-

linked but it goes deeper than that I am afraid.

Good luck to Phil Sharpe, a one-time former player with Goole Town back in the late
1980s before embarking on a good career as a player and manager and he does
bring experience and knowledge which should come to good use.
Originally here as a coach, he and Steve Jeff have swapped roles and that is no

slight on Steve at all who has had a hell of a job to try and impose his ideas under the
constraints that have been eased but far too late really to give the team a chance this
     season.

Survival and a run in the remaining cup competitions are a priority and cross ngers
some of the organisation brought to bear in our last two games, admittedly defeats,
may help tonight before a Saturda y off due to Bridlington Town’s own County Cup tie
     at the weekend.
