SINCE OUR LAST GAME
Worksop Town 2 – 0 AFC
3rd November, 2018
In the rst return xture of the NCEL season it was Worksop that again overcame AFC at Sandy
Lane in front of a crowd of 352.
The visitors came into the game with new players and new management but found the Tigers
made of stern stuff and it was two bits of individual quality at the other end that won the day.
It was Goole who had the rst two half chances in this one, rstly Lee Elam dragged his shot
wide on the edge of the box and shortly after Steven Jeffs’ low effort from range scared the large
home crowd as it creeped just past the far post.
Then on the ninth minute it was
Matt Sykes who gave the Tigers
the lead. Playing just behind a front
three Sykes found himself
unmarked on the edge of the box
after a corner routine, he icked
the ball neatly over the on rushing
defender’s tackle and smacked a
left foot volley straight into the right
hand corner giving the keeper no
chance.
The goal gave the home side
condence, nine minutes later a
move forward deserved another
goal. It culminated with Trench’s
ball into Moxam, a lay-off to Sykes in a wide position and his erce cross across the six yard box
met the stretching Craig Mitchell who couldn’t quite direct goalwards.
AFC were struggling to create chances of their own and the nearest they came after some early
scares was Worksop defender Charlie Taylor skewing a cross towards his own goal but Dave
Reay gathered well.
In the second half Goole came out with intent, Steven Jeff’s free kick was heading in but for the
Tigers wall deecting it on to the roof of the net, the subsequent corner was then cleared off the
line by Michael Trench guarding the post.
Sandy Lane then witnessed Matt Sykes took the ball under pressure and bypassed three Goole
midelders with incredible ease in Zidane-esque style.
Chances for both sides were at a minimum during the second half, Dave Reay coping with all
efforts that came his way rather comfortably. As the away side were pushing forward in numbers
for an equaliser it was the Tigers who countered to grab a decisive second.
A ball through to Connor Brunt and outrageously no offside ag saw the substitute go clear on
goal with just the keeper to beat, he coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home to kill the game.
Tigers manager Denton gave credit to AFC for looking more organised and a stronger unit than
the opening game of the season encounter, but with nothing to shown for the game, the season
continues to be as hard as ever.
