3.7.1 Background: Nandigram Upazila came into existence as a thana in 1932 following elevation
of it from a police outpost set up there much earlier when it was originally a part of Singra Upazila in
Natore Zila. It was upgraded to a upazila in 1983. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the
upazila name. It is said that during the reign of Raja Dashrat, the king of Ajaddya, Nandini, the
brother of second queen of Raja, lived in the place of present upazila headquarters. It is generally
believed that the upazila name has come as an onomastic transformation from the name Nandini.
3.7.2 Area and Location: The upazila occupies an area of 265.22 sq. km.. It is located between
24°35' and 24°48' north latitudes and between 89°08' and 89°21' east longitudes. It is bounded on the
north by Kahaloo Upazila and Sajahanpur Upazila and east by Sherpur Upazila. On other flank,
Singra Upazila of Natore Zila boarders its south and Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon Zila and
Adamdighi Upazila surround its west.
3.7.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 22
mahallas, 5 unions, 221 populated mauzas and 228 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2055 and 841 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 32461, 734, and 712 respectively.
3.7.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 45853 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.84% general unit, 0.07% institutional and
0.09% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.9 persons, for
rural area the size is also 3.9 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e. 4.0.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 2.6% general households live in pucca house,
8.2% in semi-pucca house, 86.9% in kutcha house and the remaining 2.3% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 7.1.

• Source of Drinking Water: In Nandigram Upazila, 97.5% general households get the facility
of drinking water from tube-well, 0.8% from tap and the remaining 1.7% household get water
from other sources.
• Sanitation: In the upazila, 67.6% general households use sanitary latrine, 22.7% non-
sanitary latrine and the remaining 9.7% have no toilet facility.
• Access to Electricity: All the 5 unions of the upazila have brought under the Rural
Electrification Program. However, a total of 45.2% general households reported to have
electricity connection in the entire upazila in 2011 as against 23.2% in 2001.
