3.8.1 Background: Sariakandi, the biggest upazila of Bogra Zila in respect of area came into
existence as a thana on March 20, 1886 and upgraded to upazila in 1984. Long before that the thana,
name was Naukhila. Once a fateful land erosion caused the thana precincts and surroundings to
disappear in river Bangali. Thereafter, the thana was moved to Sariakandi village and became known
by the name of this village. It is generally believed that the upazila might have derived its name from
the name of the village where its headquarters is located.
3.8.2 Area and location: The upazila occupies an area of 408.50 sq. km.. including 2.10 sq km.
forest area. It is located between 24°44' and 25°04' north latitudes and 89°31' and 88°45' east
longitudes. It is bounded on the north by Saghatta Upazila of Gaibandha Zila and Sonatala Upazila and
the east by Islampur Upazila, Madarganj Upazila and Sarishabari Upazila of Jamalpur Zila. On other
flank, Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj Zila and Dhunat Upazila boarder its south and Gabtali Upazila and
Sonatola Upazila skirts its west.
3.8.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 17
mahallas, 12 unions, 117 populated mauzas and 173 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2060 and 1091 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 21015, 2155 and 1458 respectively.
3.8.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 75614 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.86% general unit, .01% institutional and
0.13% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.6 persons, for
both rural and urban areas the size is also same i.e. 3.6.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 1.0% general households live in pucca house,
6.3% in semi-pucca house, 92.0% in kutcha house and the remaining 0.7% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 8.1.

• Source of Drinking Water: In Sariakandi Upazila, 95.7% general households get the facility
of drinking water from tube-well, 0.2% from tap and the remaining 4.1% household get water
from other sources.
• Sanitation: In the upazila, 67.7% general households use sanitary latrine, 21.8% non-
sanitary latrine and the remaining 10.5% have no toilet facility.
• Access to Electricity: All the 12 unions of the upazila have brought under the Rural
Electrification Program. However, a total of 28.1%general households reported to have
electricity connection in the entire upazila in 2011 as against 7.6% in 2001.
