took part in the mass competitions of the 7th
USSR Summer Peoples’ Games.
To quote the Chairman of the USSR Sports
Committee, Sergei Pavlov: “Physical culture and
sports have really become in this country the
people’s asset, an inseparable part of the culture
of the socialist society, displaying new sports
talents in all Union republics of this
multinational country”. The USSR Peoples’
Games are a living testimony to this.
MOSCOW OLYMPICS
For the first time in sports history, the
Olympics this year are to be held in Moscow,
capital of a socialist state. This is the result of the
great services of the Soviet Union in the struggle
for peace, its contribution to the world Olympic
movement, to the development of sports as a
whole. The ideas of the Olympic movement are
close to the minds and hearts of the Soviet people.
That is why the preparations for the 22nd
Summer Olympic Games have become truly an
affair for the entire people.
Preparations for the 1980 Olympiad are
almost complete in Moscow and other Olympic
cities of the Soviet Union — Tallinn, Leningrad,
Kiev and Minsk — and only the final touches are
now being given. The organisers are doing
everything they can so that the Games take place
without a hitch, become a great success, and turn
into a real holiday for sportsmen and millions of
fans the world over.
The Games will be held from July 19 to
August 3, 1980. The organisers have prepared an
hour-by-hour programme for all the 2 1 summer
sports events. In the course of two weeks a total
of 203 sets of medals will be contested for in
Moscow and Tallinn (venue for the Olympic
