2. MIVEC ENGINES
2. CONTINUOUS VARIABLE VALVE TIMING MIVEC ENGINE
The continuous variable valve timing MIVEC system is provided to control the valve timing continu-
ously and optimally in accordance with the engine operation.
This MIVEC system can be found in two forms;
One type is the system which controls the intake and exhaust valve timing independently. The sys-
tem controls two hydraulic actuators installed in both the intake and the exhaust sides camshaft
sprockets to continuously change the phase of the camshafts between the advance angle and the
retardation angle to control the opening/closing timing of the intake and the exhaust valves.
The other type is the system which only controls the intake valve timing by providing a hydraulic
actuator just to the intake side sprocket.

(1) Cylinder Head
Two pieces of the oil feeder control valves
for the intake and exhaust sides are re-
spectively installed into the cylinder head.
The oil feeder control valve switches the
oil flow passages to the Variable Valve
Timing (V.V.T.) sprockets to change the
camshafts advanced/retarded angles.
