Model Answer
KUCHING, Mon. – Some 800 evacuees sought shelter at relief centres as the flood
situation in Sibu in central Sarawak worsened. Many residents in the low-lying areas
were trapped at home due to the rising water level.
Several main roads, including Jalan Nyabor and Jalan Central were submerged.
Among the affected buildings were the Sarawak House shopping complex, two hotels
and a petrol station.
Heavy rain and flood waters overflowing from the Upper Rejang River have
worsened the situation. An official at the state flood operations room said that the river
had remained above the alert level for the past three days.
She said that five roads in Sibu outskirts were under 0.5 metres of water and
inaccessible to small vehicles. These roads include Jalan Salim, Jalan Stabau and
Jalan Bawang Assan.
The Meteorological Department has maintained an orange-alert warning for all
surrounding areas due to rain clouds hovering above the affected areas.
