MUET My Way Part 1 - Listening
                                   Listening Strategies

To be a good listener there are several strategies, which you need to have
and acquire. To put them in piecemeal fashion, here are some of the
                                   strategies:

                                    1 Background Knowledge

Tips The more knowledge you have about a topic being discussed, the
easier it is to understand it. Even when you do not really know
While listening, jot down the whole issue being discussed, you would still be able to make
          short notes that can help
you remember and recall intelligent guesses. So, it makes a lot of sense to read widely, to
information later. listen to news daily so as to strengthen your general background
                                        knowledge.

                                    2 Look for Main Ideas

Tips Always strive to understand the speaker’s main ideas. There is no

After listening, ask yourself need to understand every single word or phrase being uttered. This
what the recording is mainly is the same situation in your daily conversation with your friends.
about. Look out for main If you observe closely even in those situations, you only focus on
points, exclude details and the general ideas and respond accordingly.
          examples.

                                    3 Identify Pertinent Points

Tips When you understand the main idea in a conversation, chances are
you will also be able to pick up the smaller details from that idea.
Listen for details such as Examples and repetitions normally point out to these details. For
          names, time, places, dates,
location, numbers, etc. example, let’s say the speaker is talking about his university life,
that is the main idea, but details from his conversation may include
aspects like teaching, friends, accommodation, expenses and stuff.

                                    4 Inferencing

Tips You also need to know that sometimes we understand or gather
meaning not only from what has been said. There are things we
Pay attention to the events understand even when they were not uttered. For example, let’s say
that take place. For example, it’s already 1 o’clock and it is lunch break and your friend came to
          a joyous occasion, a birthday
celebration, a conversation you and ask, “Have you eaten?”, chances are your friend is asking
between student and you to go out and have lunch with him or her. So, you need to
          counselor, a talk show, etc.
bear in mind that even when others do not say exactly what they
mean, you could still deduce their meaning.
