Paraphrase
The persona questions her son’s affectionate greeting and offer

to do chores.
She comments on his clean face, tidy clothes and not spending his
Stanza 2
luncheon money.
She likens him to a meek-looking lamb unlike his usual rebellious
Stanza 3
behaviour.
The persona feels the boy is not her son but a stranger so she
Stanza 4
wants to take a closer look. Chapter 4
The persona wonders if her son had been struck by lightning or a
Stanza 5 ball. Then, she sees the school report and understands the reason
for her son’s behaviour.
Synopsis
The poem tells of the persona being puzzled by her son’s unusual behaviour on his
return from school – his affectionate gesture, appearance and behaviour. She even
doubts his identity until she notices the school report in his hand. It explains the
sudden change in his behaviour.
