FACILITES DESIGN FOR VARIOUS FACILITIES FUNCTION

 Production rate variation occur due to:

                                   - machine failures
                                   - inherent variation in operator performance
-uncertainty in the arrival of components needed at individual workstation

 Performance of the system is dependent on:
                                   - layout of the facilities
                                   - scheduling of production
                                   - machine failure
                                   - loading of the line

 The disadvantages using this fixed automation system are:
                                   - Very high equipment cost
                                   - Inflexible in the number of products manufactured
                                   - Inflexible layout

                                   - Large deviation in production rates in case of equipment failure in the
                                     line
                        Facility planning for the transfer line is relatively straightforward;
                                   - Process equipment is arranged according to process sequence.
                                   - Buffer sizes between workstation must be determines and

accommodated by several types of material handling devices such as
                                     spiral type conveyors.
                                   - Or the space between machine scan be increased to accommodate
                                     buffer stock.

 Frequently, the fixed automation system flow sequence is in straight line flow
structure as shown in Figure 4.1 (a) and U shape as in Figure 4.1 (b)
