MATERIAL HANDLING


                      a) operator-to-stock (OTS)

                            (or  man-to-part  or  in-the-aisle  system)  is  if  the  operator  travels  to  the
                      storage  location  to  retrieve  material  and  stock.  Operator-to-stock  equipment
                      types are Bin Shelving, Modular Storage Drawers in Cabinets and Gravity Flow

                      Rack.  Operator-to-Stock  Systems  retrieval  equipment  types  are  Picking  Carts,
                      Order Picking Trucks Person-on-Board AR/R and Robotic Retrieval.

                     b)   Stock-to-operator
                            O  r   (part-to-man or end-aisle systems) is if material is mechanically

                     transported to and operator for retrieval. Stock-to-operator equipments are
                     Miniload Automated Storage and Retrieval Machines

                      5.4.4  Automatic identification and communication equipment


                            A vision system reading and interpreting labels to identify the proper
                      destination for a cartin traveling on a sortation conveyor - A laser scanner to
                      relay the inventory levels of a small parts warehouse to a computer via radio
                      frequency communication. A voice recognition system to identify parts received

                      at the receiving dock. A radio frequency (RF) or surface acoustical wave (SAW)
                      tag use to permanently identify a tote pans or pallet. A card with magnetic
                      stripe that travels with a unit load to identify the load through the
                      distribution channels


                     1)     Automatic Identification and Recognition Technologies
                     a)  Bar Coding
                           Bar codes, bar code readers (contact and non contact), and bar code printers

                          Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read and interpret
                          alphanumeric data. Equipments include handheld scanners.
