Bringing the heart and
Mind together for Caritas education*
This chapter extends the concept of Caritas teaching and learning to
nursing education. It explores the nature of professional nursing and
health-sciences education and curricula from a moral, philosophical
framework of Caritas thinking, encompassing an expanded view of
nursing as a human-caring science. Contemporary theories and phi-
losophies of caring and healing and their relevance to nursing and
health-sciences education are integrated in the framework. A focus
on educating students for a values-based practice morally guided
to create reflective, humane Caritas practitioners is explored, along
