Pathophysiology

Normal pleural fluid has characteristics such as:

• Clear ultrafiltrate of plasma

• Ph 7.60-7.64

• Protein content <2% (1-2 g/dl)

• WBC <1000 millimeters³

• Glucose content is the same as plasma

• Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) Level <50% Compared to Plasma

• Sodium, potassium and calcium concentrations are the same as for interstitial

fluid.
