Complication Thoracentesis

Complications of thoracentesis are:-

1. Pneumothorax - negligence because it allows air to enter the pleural cavity.

2. Haemomothorax - causes injury to the lungs due to incomplete needle insertion /
negligence.

3. Tension pneumothorax - due to excessive air intake.

4. Subcutaneous emphysema - air enters the subcutaneous tissue through the needle

insertion hole.

5. Pulmonary edema - due to sudden mediastinal shift cause aspirate fluid in the pleura

too much.

6. Infection - do not practice aseptic techniques.
