         Next Steps

As we move forward let us recognize that our Lake Plan is a great start to preserving our environment for future
generations. SLPOA will continue to focus on providing information and education to protect and enhance the
environmental health of our lake. With the help of the whole Community we can make a difference in the
future of this area. Let’s join together and help each other in any way we can to ensure the safety of our
community. We are fortunate to live in a very special area on the shores of Sharbot Lake. Let’s make sure
future generations have the opportunities that we have been gifted with.

                                                                                                              th
Carol noted that the Lake Plan had been presented to Central Frontenac Township Council at their July 9
meeting and the Plan was formally received. One of the Lake Plan recommendations is that SLPOA executive
follow up using this document as the baseline for information and measurement moving forward.

Each household attending the AGM was given a copy of the Lake Plan.

         Presentations:

Paul Lehman (General Manager- Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA))
Climate Change Implications on Water Levels
Paul said that science is clear. It shows us that climate change is an issue of today- not one of tomorrow. He
suggested that adapting to changing climate involves all levels of government, business industry, community
groups and individuals and that local leadership and action is critical.
MVCA will quantify projected changes in precipitation and temperature. They will also assess secondary
impacts (fisheries/water quality). The impact of climate change on Sharbot Lake includes lower water levels,
warmer water temperatures and increased algae blooms.
Paul Lehman’s presentation is to be added to the SLPOA website.

Liam Taylor (Water Testing Department with MVCA)
Liam discussed the various programs that the MVC is involved with. They include Invasive species, Turtle
Monitoring Project, bird studies program and water testing.
When asked how we can help reduce phosphorous levels in the lake he gave the following suggestions

             • Stop fertilizing your lawn and maintain a ribbon of life at the shoreline
             • Monitor your septic system for leaking and inefficient operation
Liam Taylor’s presentation is to be posted on the SLPOA website.

Gifts were presented to Paul and Liam on behalf of the SLPOA membership
